June Meeting

May isn't even here and already we're concerned with June's meeting. Crazy isn't it? Be that as it may, June's meeting is a special one because Amy Wegener of the literary department of Actor's Theatre of Louisville is going to be our guest speaker. Ms. Wegner will be discussing how to judge contest entries in a play contest. The meeting will be June 7th at the Beaumont Branch of the Lexington Public Library from 1:00 to 4:30 pm. Come join us!

By the time of the June meeting initial judging of this year's 100 entries will have taken place and it will time to get down to a maximum of nine (9) semifinalists for this year's contest. Based on just the 30+ entires I've read getting down to 9 will not be easy; from those I read I culled down to 7! I haven't spoken with the other judges to see how their initial readings and selections went but my guess is that the initial judging has identified at least 25-30 very high quality entries from which we will be selecting the 9 semi-finalists.

Exciting news: Sometimes the mountain comes to us

As unbelievable as it may seem sometimes the mountain comes to the prophet, instead of the prophet having to go to the mountain: On June 7th a representative of Actor's Theatre of Louisville will attend the monthly meeting of 517 Playwrights!

The reason for a member of ATL's literary department to attend the meeting is to give members (and anyone else who'd like to attend) insights into how to judge a play contest: criteria, number of recommended judges, number of readers, etc etc. and to answer questions we might have about Actor's Theatre and the Humana Festival (which I think nearly all of our members have entered at least once).

Details about WHERE and WHEN (the time) of the meeting will be posted once plans have been finalized. But if you'd like to attend the meeting please send a message to me at ky.playwright @yahoo.com so that I can have some idea how large a facility will be required. Thanks.

Actors, directors and fans of theatre: Join us!

517 Playwrights is open to anyone and everyone. If you are a playwright come and share your work with other playwrights: you'll be given feedback about what works and what doesn't. You'll be given encouragement to keep working and writing. You'll be given suggestions from fellow writers about how to make the play better. And always you'll be hearing the works of others who also are 'struggling' to make their works work.

Sounds like we only want playwrights doesn't it? Not at all, Theatre is a collaborative effort and new plays need to be no less. Right now all of our members and participants are playwrights, but for this organization to really succeed we also need directos and actors, plus theatre goers and technicians, to join in our efforts. People who have a different interest in theatre work each bring a different perspective to new works. So please, whatever your theatrical 'calling,' join us in bringing new works to the stages of our minds in the hope that one day those plays will move from the mind to the stage!

See you Sunday April 5th at the main branch of the Lexington Public Library, near the second floor elevators. We'll gather there then pick out a table and read and discuss the new scripts our members bring to the table. The meeting will begin at 2:00 and end promptly at 5:00 pm (when the library closes). Based on the plays we've read up to this point you will be impressed by the talent of our area playwrights. Join us.

Next Meeting

The next meeting of 517 Playwrights will be Sunday April 5th. We will meet from 2 pm to 5 pm at the downtown branch of the Lexington Public Library. We'll meet by the elevators on the second floor then get a table. Bring a script you've been working on. Hope to see you there.
